Windows Event Log Warning

Date: 08-02-10
From: William Swann <wswann_at_biocmp.com>

Hi All,

We are still running a v2003r8 version of 4D on a Windows 2003 R2
Server. The database has been running fine and while we are migrating to
v11, this system has to last for a few more months. This database
principally accessed via the web. The last few weeks the system has
begun to crawl. There are an average of 35 users accessing the db
throughout the day. It is not a public web site. All access is through
SSL. A review of the Windows applications event log shows a variant of
the following error:

"The selection for file xx has been swapped to disk". Where xx is the
table number in the database. It occurs quite frequently once it occurs
in the log, at least one event every one to two minutes and is not
relegated to any one table. A couple of questions to everyone, first has
anyone seen this in their application before? Second, has anyone found a
solution to address this swapping 4D is doing?

I have set the cache fairly low on this application as when the flush
buffers occurs it can bring the database to a near stand still. I am
tempted to drop it even more so that the disk writes are quicker, but
realize that this can also compromise performance even further. Here is
some information concerning the application and hardware it is running on:

Server Setup:
Windows server 2003 32bit
2 x Quad Core XEON 3.16 GHz processors
4 Gb RAM
48 GB RAID 10 (exclusive for the data file)

4D server and structure setup
60 Blocks _at_ 64000K
Current Cache - 51200
Flush buffers - every 15 minutes
#web process min : 1000
#web process max : 2000

structure : 30 Gb
Main data file : 1.6 Gb
4 Data segments : 1.5 GB ea
1 Data segment : 1.2 Gb
1 Data segment: empty
total: > 9 Gb
data file utilization > 95%.

This has been a pretty solid system for some time now, but the natives
are getting restless with this performance hit. Any thoughts would
greatly be welcomed, Thanks.
