My findings are the same as yours. There appears to be no way to work around this. Even worse, if there is a log file at the last location the data file saw it then 4D will immediately try to integrate it. Very bad news if you just want to restore a copy of your data file.
At the very least it would be nice if one of the options after the restore was to "disable logging" if the log file was not set as mandatory in the structure.
